Road Trip Readiness – How to Prepare Your Tyres for the Holiday Season

Prepare Your Tyres

Winter is the perfect time to start planning your summer vacations and road trips. Whether you’re considering a coastal adventure or a cross-country journey, it’s essential that you prepare your tyres so that your drive is a safe one.

At Swan Tyre Service, we know just how integral tyres are to the safety and performance or your car, and how inconvenient tyre issues can be – especially when you’re a long way from home! That’s why we’ve put together this checklist of ways to prepare your tyres for the holiday season.

Check the Tyre Pressure

One of the fundamental aspects of tyre maintenance is maintaining optimal inflation. Having the proper tyre pressure is crucial to your driving safety, so you should always make sure the pressure is right. Underinflated or overinflated tyres can adversely affect your vehicle’s performance, fuel efficiency, and safety:

  • If pressure is too high, you run the risk of being too high off the ground, bouncing instead of gripping. This means that when it comes to turning corners, braking and general stability, your car will perform less smoothly, or worse, it can cause an accident.
  • If the pressure is too low, too much of the tyre’s surface area makes contact with the ground, causing friction and overheating, and possibly even tread separation, which could also result in a blow-out.

Use a reliable tyre pressure gauge to check the inflation of each tyre. Refer to your vehicle’s manual or the manufacturer’s label located the driver’s door or glove box for the recommended pressure levels. Alternatively, pop in and see us at Swan Tyre Service and we will check your tyre pressure for you free of charge.

Book in for a Rotation and Balance

If it’s been a while since your last tyre rotation or if you’ve started to notice vibration when driving at high speeds, you should have your tyres rotated and balanced by a professional. This process ensures that each tyre wears evenly and maintains optimal performance throughout your road trip.

Inspect Your Tyre Tread

The tread depth of your tyres directly impacts your vehicle’s grip on the road. Insufficient tread can lead to decreased traction, especially in wet or slippery conditions, increasing the risk of accidents. Conduct a thorough visual inspection of each tyre, looking for signs of uneven wear, bulges, or cracks. If you aren’t sure what to look for or if you have any concerns about the condition of your tyres, get in touch with our team for expert advice. You may find that you need new tyres to ensure your car is safe for your upcoming adventures.

Ensure Proper Alignment

Proper wheel alignment is crucial for safe and efficient driving. Misaligned wheels can cause uneven tyre wear, affect handling, and compromise fuel efficiency. If you notice your vehicle pulling to one side or experience steering vibrations, it’s a sign that you may have alignment issues. Have a tyre expert check and correct the wheel alignment if necessary, as this will provide you with a smooth and stable driving experience.

Don’t Forget the Spare!

In the event of an emergency, you’ll certainly need your spare tyre. Make sure to check your spare tyre’s pressure and tread depth, just as you would with the other tyres. You should also inspect it for any signs of damage or aging. If your spare tyre is old or in poor condition, consider replacing it before your road trip to eliminate any potential issues.

Have Your Whole Car Inspected and Serviced

While the tyres are arguably one of the most important components that contribute to the general safety of your vehicle, you should never go on a road trip or holiday without making sure the suspension, brakes and steering are all working as they should. If there is any vibration in the steering wheel or pulsing in the brake pedal, get your brakes checked because your rotors could be warped. Check your wheel arches. Are your shock absorbers dry? Are they leaking? If so replace them so your car doesn’t bounce all over the place and off the road. If your car hasn’t had a recent service, it’s worthwhile having one done, even if it’s not quite due. This will mean all filters and fluids will be checked and changed if necessary, and any potential issues identified and rectified. You will then be able to head off on your trip with confidence knowing that your car is in optimal condition.
